Why This Story Doesn't Matter, But The Ones We're Missing Do

Senator Chuck Grassley posted a tribute to his vacuum cleaner, and the internet smiled. A man and his machine, decades together, a nice human moment.

But here's what bothered us about this story getting picked up by a major national outlet: it's exactly the kind of feel-good political content that fills the void where serious local journalism used to be.

The Real Problem

This isn't about Grassley or his vacuum. It's about what we've stopped paying attention to. Since 2005, 3,500 newspapers have closed in America. Two hundred thirteen counties now have zero local news operation. And the US press freedom ranking has collapsed from 32nd to 57th globally.

When there's no one left to cover your city council, your school board, your county hospital, stories migrate upward, to national outlets, to social media, to whatever gets engagement. A senator's vacuum, a celebrity's workout routine, the horse race of the next election. Real things, maybe, but they're not your things.

The Common Good Party exists because money corrupts politics. But corruption doesn't just happen in backrooms anymore. It happens in the light, because nobody's local newsroom has the budget to cover it anymore. No reporter digging into zoning board approvals, tax assessments, school budget cuts, the deals between developers and city hall. That's where real power lives. That's where real corruption happens.

And we've let it die.

Why This Matters Right Now

A functioning democracy needs functioning local news. Not because journalists are noble (though many are), but because the press is the immune system of democracy. It doesn't work when it's running on fumes.
